Dear Readers,

I have been contemplating this letter and I am truly humbled by the Creator of this amazing world we live in. I say that because while I have been working in the field of beauty for over 30 years, much of my experience came simply as the result of wanting to be of service…to women. I think back to the joy I felt when I opened my new Avon Sales Kit at just 12 years old. I couldn’t wait to deliver the newspaper to those on my paper route. Yes, they would find an Avon catalogue in the bag. When I collected for the paper, I would ask for their Avon order. I developed relationships with the ladies with makeup, for makeup is something that most women use in some fashion or another. I had no idea in 1995 that permanent makeup would become such an amazing instrument that I would use and meet some of the most incredible women that I would have not met otherwise.

While I really enjoy applying permanent cosmetics and the “wow” of taking years off with no surgery, I knew that I could offer more. In 2009 I made a decision to open my own studio and get back to the paramedical tattooing that I began in the mid-90’s.

That same year while continuing my education, I participated in an areola tattoo workshop and that was my introduction to the MTA (Myself: Together Again) non-profit organization. I was so thrilled to see the beautiful photo journal of one woman’s personal journey told so beautifully…the advocate in me began to blossom.

Permanent Makeup is a wonderful solution for women undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments for cancer… easing the distress of hair loss during an especially difficult time. With the increase in early detection and breast cancer awareness areola tattooing also known, as Breastheticsis becoming the number one choice for complete breast reconstruction post mastectomy.

I want to thank you again for your support and participation in my effort to let women know about their rights, choices and options for complete breast reconstruction post mastectomy.

Holiday parties are just around the corner. Here are a few party makeup tips that won’t make you look “costum-ish” using my favorite products from blinc, Colorescience, TINte and Xtreme Cosmetics to get you ready to go from work to cocktail party.

Rule Number One: Never play up BOTH the eyes and the mouth.

Rule Number Two: For the ultimate holiday party makeup, apply more shimmer or go deeper with the red lipstick.

Rule Number Three: PRIMER is what we wear to make sure that our makeup keeps looking fresh and clean for a good 16 hours (8am-midnight).

What are the hottest makeup trends to watch this holiday season?

Two looks are classic and hot right now: The “smokey”, shimmery eye (must try this with the Glideliner by Xtreme Cosmetics) paired with light lips and the deep red lips (Perfect Pout Collection by Colorescience) and balanced with a light eye. Shimmer is in this year, as it was last year, and with Shimmering Face Pearls…oh, it’s the perfect look.

What can you do to punch up your conservative work look without taking it all off and starting over?

Taking your makeup from work to evening is actually pretty easy if you prep yourself. Apply primer, mineral foundation, mascara and gloss or lipstick before work. After work, use Illuminating Pearl Powder for a flawless finish (it’s truly anti-aging), cover any blemishes or discolorations with Corrector Palette and color cheeks. Then follow these steps for either the Smokey Eye look or the Deep Red Lip look:

For the Smokey Eye

Apply your eye makeup: Eyeliner on both top and bottom lashes (be sure to smudge it, dark eyeliner will age you), an eye shadow primer (I like flesh primer by blinc), and a shimmery shadow on the lid. Don’t apply any more mascara unless your earlier application has rubbed completely off – otherwise you risk getting clumpy lashes.

Dab a shimmery blush to cheeks with Bronze, Rose Petals or Sun Kissed Shimmering Face Pearls.

Apply a Chablis Lip Polish and finish with Zin shimmer or your favorite flavored Lip Shine with Face Pearls.

For Deep Red Lips

Cover unsightly veins or discoloration on eyelids with Perfekt by Colorescience.

Apply a very light shimmery blush (Nikki Pink Shimmering Face Pearls) on the top of the cheeks.

Use Lip Definer to refresh lip line, fill in with Cake Lip Shine by TINte.

Line eyes with Graphite Glideliner and freshen mascara if needed.

What Women Want…to Maintain Middle Age!

Consultations over the years have revealed one thing consistently. Women want to look natural and do less. … wear less makeup, spend less time and have a beautiful, healthy look…yes it’s possible.

While the reason for scheduling a permanent makeup consultation is to find out how it can help achieve the look they want. I will begin recommendations with demonstrating and discussing the various “distractions” our faces have. Yes, certainly loosing eyebrows and having our lips thin or lashes lighten can wash a face out, but consider the unwanted colors of red and brown from sun damage; and pink, brown and blue hues under and/or around eyes resulting from aging or genetics…finally the lines, fine or not so fine. The most common response — women wear more eye makeup, darker or brighter lipstick and notice the lack of eyebrow. The eyebrow is one facial feature that women spend the most money on while trying to find the best pencil, powder, shape with stencils and professional services than any other.

In younger years, our skin was even colored, toned, and smooth. Our makeup was all about color. We had all colors of eyeshadow, blush, lipstick and more. The picture I’ve painted may seem bleak, it’s not — simply out-dated. Think “canvas” instead of color. Our face is the canvas and when prepped; we can wear less makeup, spend less time and look our best.

Introducing the Virtual Facelift (VFL) Makeover to meet your need as the woman wanting to “maintain middle age”. This makeover is all about using a “no-color” makeup to enhance brows, eyelines and lips. An even skin tone to take away distractions (the color we don’t want) and adding back color that has softened with time that creates the illusion of a non-surgical lift… with or without permanent makeup.

The VFL Makeover is a one-hour makeover and demonstration that includes step-by-step instructions that turn back the hands of time for a younger you, all the time.

Step 1:
Even skin tone taking away distractions
Correct with Wild to Mild Primer,
Protect with Sunforgettable SPF50 Medium,
Colore with pressed All Even, and Perfect with Setting Mist.

Step 2:
Redefine brows they make a big difference
(Universal Brow Definer – there’s no other pencil like it!)

Step 3:
Enhance lash lines with Xtreme Glideliner pencil
(soft to bold and what a hold!)

Step 4:
Redefine lip line with Goddesses Aren’t Born
(funny name, great universal pencil)

Oncology Esthetics: Permanent Makeup…Looking Good, Feeling Better

By Sarah Oliver

Women wear makeup for many reasons. Some women wake up in the morning and put their face on right away; others prefer a natural, no makeup look. Makeup helps women look their best – and there is a lot to be said about feeling better as a result of looking your best.

What role does makeup play for women that are battling cancer, feel ill physically and experiencing hair loss from treatment? For these patients, hair loss adds additional stress during an already difficult time. Losing hair due to a treatment designed to cure creates a cruel irony that most cancer patients will have to face – often times wreaking havoc on their self-esteem. Self-esteem plays a tremendous role in the success of a patient’s treatment. The ability of a women to feel great about herself during this time propels her forward by leaps and bounds on what will be a long road to recovery.

Many chemotherapy patients will experience total hair loss, including eyelashes and eyebrows. While wigs are commonly used, patients may feel like there is no alternative when they suffer from facial hair loss. This is simply not true. There is a simple, long lasting solution: permanent makeup. Permanent makeup consists of a method which delivers tiny color particles beneath the client’s skin. This quick procedure recreates the illusion of eyebrows and eyelashes, eliminating the need to continually reapply make-up – allowing clients freedom to spend more time focusing on recovery.

During a recent interview, Dr. Tracey Stokes, MD, FACS, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon who specializes in surgery after mastectomies, was asked what role permanent makeup plays for cancer patients. She stated, “Permanent makeup is a big boost for a woman’s self-esteem during a point when they may not feel well physically and may be self-conscious about their looks. Hair loss, Alopecia and physical deformities may happen as a result of cancer treatment. Permanent makeup helps patients look better without having to do anything – just waking up and feeling better knowing that they look good. It’s a wonderful recovery remedy.”

Permanent makeup helps ease the distress of chemotherapy by preserving the appearance of eyebrows and eyelashes. Women can feel confident with natural looking eyebrows and beautifully defined eyes. It can be applied one month before the client undergoes cancer drug administration. Patients already undergoing treatment can have the procedure performed during an off week (no drugs administered), if approved by a physician.

A recent client of Naturally You, diagnosed with Stage Four Lung Cancer, stated “Although there is no cure for me, I am going to live all that I can…and my eyebrows are important; they make me feel like me.”

If you are a cancer patient experiencing facial hair loss, know that there is an option available to assist you in looking your best. Let permanent makeup help you enter into treatment feeling beautiful and having one less thing to worry about.

Sarah Oliver, a specialist in cosmetic/paramedical permanent makeup, is an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society’s Look Good, Feel Better program. She speaks at local support groups and serves many women with her Oncology Esthetics offering. Her passion is to help women recovering from cancer achieve the look they desire with permanent makeup, a non-surgical solution for eyebrows, eyeliner, lips and post mastectomy areola repigmentation. Having permanent eyebrows applied is her most popular request. Eyebrows make a difference; they frame the face, illuminate our character and personality and can create a younger, happy, rested look even when you wake up feeling lousy from your treatment.

What is the Single Most Important Anti-Aging Essential?

Summertime can often mean a vacation from or a change in our daily makeup application. Researchers estimate that the sun is responsible for up to 90% of the skin’s visible aging. I hope to provide you with some information that will help you make the best choices for you …your skin is vulnerable 24/7/365!

Sunscreen compliance is the single most important anti-aging essential.

Over 200 million people are NOT in compliance with sunscreen use.

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US

Even Dr. Perry Robins, President of the Skin Cancer Foundation, admitted to a group of MOHS surgeons that he is remiss in “reapplying” his sunscreen.

During my permanent makeup consultation I discuss the difference the health of the skin makes before permanent makeup is applied. The healthier the skin, the longer the color will last.

Now, let’s talk about the two forgotten facial features…Lips & Eyes

First lips

…they most certainly lose out in sun protection. While squamous cell carcinoma is at epidemic levels in the US only 30% of women apply sunscreen to the lips. Lips are more susceptible to sun damage because lips thin outer layer has almost no melanin. To make matters worse, high shine lipgloss is the rage and it magnifies UV radiation. Can we be in fashion and sunscreen compliant? Yes!

If you have full lip permanent makeup you have a great beginning. While I cannot make any claims regarding SPF there’s no denying that you have some added protection with your intra-dermal re-pigmentation. I recommend Colorescience SPF 35 Lip Shine (available in 5 colors, one clear). It gives moisture, shine, physical protection and is a great skin cancer preventative. Wear it alone, over permanent makeup or layer you’re your favorite lip color. All day, every day whether you are headed for the beach, golf course or office …knowing that your lips are protected from full spectrum UVA & UVB rays. http://www.livestrong.com/article/9311-lip-gloss-might-increase-risk/

As for eyes,

chemical sunscreens (lotions & creams) often times cause eye irritation. This unfortunate side affect is the very reason eyes are more less not protected and the fact is that 5%-10% of all skin cancer is found on the eyelid. “Eyelid skin cancer” is not something most people think about,” said C. William Hanke, MD, senior vice president of The Skin Cancer Foundation. “With their thin, delicate structures, the eyes and surrounding areas are particularly prone to various cancers. And it’s an area people often forget to protect from the sun.”

A easily applied, light weight, sheer coverage skin cancer prevention is Eyescreen SPF 30. It, like the other Colorescience *physical sunscreens begins working immediately reflecting UV rays upon application. http://www.skincancer.org/For-Your-Eyes/

Knowledge is power

…that’s what the doctors are saying. Dr. Perry Robins, MD, a MOHS surgeon and President/Founder of Skin Cancer Foundation states, “Sunforgettable SPF 30 rated sunscreen powders are weightless, invisible, instantly effective and easy to apply. Patients who use SPF rated mineral makeups such as Colorescience can conveniently use their makeup as a sunscreen.”

Let me know how I can help you. Most importantly, apply sunscreen and Re-apply it! I know you won’t wear (nor will husbands and kids) what you don’t like. It has to be easy, and it’s even better when it’s beautiful. I want to wear easy, effective and elegant makeup with sunscreen.

…is one of the most common questions I get asked during an initial consultation. My answer, there are many factors to take into consideration. Permanent makeup is permanent as in when you wake up each morning its there.

Let’s back up. First, all permanent makeup colors fade over time. This is to be expected. Lighter colors will fade sooner than a medium or dark shade. For instance, eyeliner may need to be refreshed every 2-5 years while light to medium eyebrows would be 1-3 years.

The sun is the enemy to permanent makeup and to all pigment color for that matter. Wearing sunscreen, hats and sunglasses will help preserve your makeup color. However, if you spend a lot of time outdoors, even with these precautions, on an average you will require more frequent touch-ups.

The another enemy to permanent makeup is anti-aging skin care products that promote rapid exfoliation such as alpha hydroxy acid, Retin-A, glycolic products and related professional treatments. All are wonderful for the skin, they just should not be applied to areas that have been re-pigmented with permanent makeup color, as they will alter the color and slowly fade it away. This also is true when considering tinting eyebrows gone gray. Professional hair color can bleach out parts of permanent eyebrow color…the results orange brows.

Now, let’s talk about the skin before permanent makeup is applied. The healthier the skin, the longer the color will last. Sadly, many of us grew up in a time where our definition of sunscreen was baby oil. Yes, I know that we didn’t know what we do today back then, but still…our skin does have some (hopefully) minimal, permanent sun damage that affects the dermal layer. This happens to be the section of the skin where the color needs to be implanted. Simply stated, the healthier this layer, the better the color retention. Other factors such as smoking and certain medications will compromise the integrity of the dermis as well. So there you have it, there really is no quick and easy answer to the question…”How long will my color last?”

When the color does fade to a lighter shade, a simple touch up in my office will make your color look brand new. Remember, permanent makeup is a low not no maintenance procedure.

If you have been considering permanent makeup and would like to know more call and schedule a complimentary, no obligation personal consultation.

The Mission: To look your best 24/7 – The Solution: Permanent Eyebrows

Jamie Lee Curtis once said, “After her soul, the first thing that I check out in a woman are her eyebrows.” Eyebrows are one of the greatest assets a woman holds – they are an important player in face-to-face communication and they have the ability to help show off a wide range of emotions and facial expressions. An example of infamous eyebrows? Audrey Hepburn. Known for her classic beauty, many people remember one distinct feature about Hepburn’s face – her thick, strong eyebrows.

Why are eyebrows so important & what can permanent eyebrows do for you? Eyebrows frame the face and having the proper eyebrow shape can enhance the shape of the eyes, while also taking years off of your appearance. Choosing permanent makeup for your eyebrows allows you to fill-in sparse eyebrows, reshape any poorly arched or uneven brows and is also a way to add new eyebrows for clients that have undergone hair loss – either through Alopecia, Chemotherapy, burns or injury. A permanent eyebrow procedure will drastically rejuvenate your appearance by creating a “non-surgical brow-lift”. Think about it – you have the ability to get rid of that sad, angry or tired look…without surgery! Permanent eyebrows are also known as the perfect finishing touch for clients who have had BOTOX.

Different Strokes for Different Folks

During a woman’s daily makeup routine, eyebrow application usually takes the most time, is difficult to do and can create a challenge when you are trying to recreate the same look every day. Permanent eyebrows are an investment – one with great benefits. You will enjoy hassle-free eyebrows that are both moisture and smear proof and you will look your best all of the time. With all of these benefits and more, it is easy to understand why permanent eyebrows have become one of the most highly sought after procedure.

So, what are some different types of permanent brows? A variety of looks can be created with permanent eyebrows – each one unique and in accordance with the distinct personality of the client. Clients can choose from soft and powdery strokes and classic hair strokes over a powdery base to sophisticated, multi-colored hair strokes and sexy, bold glamour strokes. For women that have little to no brow hair, permanent eyebrows will be designed specifically for you using custom blended colors that render a “hair-like” appearance. Are you a fair-skinned blonde? You need not worry about ending up with a harsh or artificial look; be confident in knowing that a soft, feathery brow that exudes a
natural, timeless beauty awaits you.

Schedule Your Complimentary Eyebrow Consultation

During your eyebrow consultation with Sarah Oliver, often referred to as the “permanent eyebrow expert” by area physicians and beauty professionals, you will learn about the different procedures and also be asked to fill out a questionnaire. The eyebrow consultation also includes tinting, shaping, application and a lesson. Sarah is a big believer in preserving eyebrows, so she begins with tinting the brows, no matter how few. The tint will bring out the soft, vellous light hairs that are often not seen. Tint colors range from Auburn, Medium-Brown and Dark-Brown to Black-Brown and Black. Brows are then designed and reshaped. Once the desired brow has been achieved, Sarah will suggest techniques and colors in addition to showing a series of “before” and “after” photos of her work.

Important Tips When Considering Permanent Eyebrows

Clients that choose to have the permanent eyebrow procedure done should be aware of factors that can contribute to color changes. Here are some to keep in mind: Improper Consultation and/or Pre/Post Care Instructions; using aspirin based product and/or blood thinners 1 week prior to the procedure(s); sun exposure (including tanning booths); salt, from either the environment or foods; acids from foods or topical
products; professional hair color applied to tint light or gray eyebrows; whitening toothpastes and teeth whitening services and chemical facial treatments.

Another important thing to remember is that eyebrows are often refreshed every 1 – 3 years, as the colors used in the procedure are generally softer than colors used in eyeliner or lip colors.

“The joyful spirit always carries its eyebrows high” – Pierre de Ronsard

Remember, classic, permanent makeup requires an experienced artist who embodies a refined sense of color and style with the unique ability to custom blend colors for varying complexions, personalities and lifestyles. Countless women can tell you from personal experience that having a permanent makeup procedure performed has given them enormous freedom and the ability to “wake up and go” – getting their morning routine started quickly, without the hassle of a long-winded daily makeup ritual.

In addition to being an expert in her field, Sarah Oliver also offers her clients a wide range of products that work in perfect harmony with permanent makeup procedures. The AMPLIF-eye product line, which features products such as the Lash and Brow Fortifier, is compatible with permanent eyebrows. This highly concentrated formula is full of fortifying peptides and botanical extracts that nourish, all combined in a delivery system that gets directly to the root of short, thinning, gray and sparse lashes and brows.

Dealing with hair loss can be difficult, for just about anyone. For patients battling cancer, hair loss adds additional stress during an already difficult time. Most cancer patients will face losing their crowning glory, their hair, to the very treatment designed to cure them – a cruel irony that many patients struggle to come to terms with and which can deeply affect their self-esteem. Did you know that self-esteem plays an integral role in the success of cancer treatment? Yes, a woman’s ability to feel great about herself is a huge leap forward on what can be a long road to
recovery.

Chemotherapy and Alopecia patients can experience total hair loss, including eyebrows and eyelashes. Though there are alternatives to hair loss, such as wigs, which can help a client feel like their old self again, there is another answer in regards to facial hair loss – permanent
makeup. Permanent makeup consists of a method which delivers tiny color particles beneath the client’s skin and can be used before undergoing chemotherapy or radiation. The procedure can be completed in as little as an hour and recreates the illusion of eyebrows and eyelashes, eliminating the clients need to continually reapply their make-up and allowing them the freedom to spend more time focusing on their recovery.

Through permanent makeup, women have the ability to ease the distress of chemotherapy by preserving the appearance of their eyebrows and eyelashes. Women can feel confident with natural looking eyebrows and beautifully defined eyes with this long lasting and simple
solution. Permanent makeup can be applied one month before the client undergoes cancer drug administration; this time frame allows the client’s original facial hair, which is still in place, to be enhanced with natural looking micro-pigments. The client can enter into treatment feeling beautiful and having one less thing to worry about.

For those patients already undergoing chemotherapy treatment, permanent makeup can be applied in the midst of treatment, if approved by a physician. The procedure can be performed during an off-week when no chemotherapy drugs are being administered. No matter where you are in terms of your treatment, there is an option available to you that will assist you in looking your best.

Chemo and Hair Loss Facts…

Chemotherapy is a treatment designed to significantly restrict the growth of cells. The treatment also affects the constantly growing hair follicles; because the cells which are found in the hair root and scalp are affected, the growth begins to slow down and eventually comes to a halt. In addition, the patient’s hair follicles become weaker and are no longer able to support the existing hair strands, causing them to break or fall off completely.

Because the scalp is fed by a complex network of fine blood vessels, a high concentration of the chemotherapy drug is delivered to each hair follicle. Some patients will experience hair loss within 7 – 10 days of their first treatment, with the hair from the crown and sides of the
head being lost first. The most severe loss occurs 1 -2 months after treatment as begun. Once the entire chemotherapy drug treatment plan has been completed, patients notice regrowth of hair within 4 -6 weeks. Once hair begins to grow, it is not uncommon to notice some changes.

65% of chemotherapy hair loss sufferers have experienced a change in their hair texture and/or color. The above statistic is broken down further as follows: Approximately 33% of patients will experience a change in color; 40% will experience a change in hair texture; and 50% will
experience will experience a change in hair type when regrowth takes place.

Hair After Chemo…

Patients who have undergone chemotherapy treatment will experience a hair regrowth rate of just over a centimeter per month. Hair that is newly grown after treatment is fragile – finer and weaker than hair that has been growing for a long period of time. Most patients will notice that
their hair will return to its full thickness and strength after 6 months from their final treatment. During the 6 month period after treatment ceases, it is important not to “stress” new hair growth – patients are advised to refrain from subjecting their hair to permanent or semi-permanent hair dyes during this time. Because dye absorption ability may also be altered in newly grown hair, it is essential to perform a strand test when tinting new hair to see how it will react. During these early months of regrowth, vegetable dyes and non-permanent hair colors offer an easy and safe solution that is gentler on hair that is in a fragile state.

During this difficult time, it is vital for patients to feel supported in every area. Patients should be encouraged to turn to their hairdresser in helping them make the right decisions in how to properly deal with the consequences of their treatment.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. ~Eleanor Roosevelt
